Species Information
Common Name: Moroccan Spiny-tailed Lizard / Moroccan Uromastyx
Scientific Name: Uromastyx nigriventris
Colour/Locality: Flame
Age: CB26
Sex: Unsexed
Temperament: Alert, inquisitive and generally very rewarding to work with; settles well with calm, consistent handling
Average Adult Size: Up to around 16" / 40cm
Average Lifespan: 15–20+ years with good care
Photos taken: 4.10.26
Current Care
Enclosure:
A spacious, dry terrestrial setup with plenty of floor space, strong UVB, intense basking heat and secure hides. Uromastyx are active desert animals and should have plenty of room to move around, explore and thermoregulate.
Heating & Temperature:
Basking Surface: 50–55°C
Hot Side Ambient: Around 35–40°C
Cool Side Ambient: Around 25–30°C
Night Temperature: Around 18–22°C
The basking surface should be measured with an infrared thermometer, with digital thermometers used to monitor ambient temperatures.
Lighting:
High-quality T5 HO UVB, ideally around 12–14%, positioned over the basking area
UVB should provide a strong basking-zone UVI, with positioning adjusted according to the specific lamp and enclosure
Bright full-spectrum/daylight lighting is also beneficial
A powerful basking lamp is essential to create the high temperatures this species requires
We personally find floodlights or halogens work particularly well for creating an intense basking area.
Furnishings & Substrate
Rocks and slate for basking and climbing
Secure hides and shaded areas
Plenty of open floor space
Opportunities to dig and exhibit natural behaviours
A suitable sand/soil substrate that remains completely dry
Good ventilation throughout the enclosure
Feeding
Uromastyx nigriventris are primarily herbivorous and should be offered a varied, high-fibre diet.
They are currently feeding well on a mixture of suitable:
Leafy greens
Rocket
Endive and chicory
Fresh herbs
Suitable weeds and flowers
Vegetables such as squash
A small amount of suitable seeds/pulses can also form part of a varied adult diet.
Fresh greens should make up the majority of the diet, with appropriate supplementation provided as required.
Insects and animal protein are not required as part of their normal diet.
Additional Notes
Bright-eyed, alert and feeding reliably
Strong growth and clean, regular shedding
Currently unsexed due to age
Hardy, active and incredibly rewarding when their specialist requirements are met
Strong UVB, intense basking temperatures and a dry environment are essential
This is a long-lived species, so prospective owners should be prepared for a long-term commitment
Photos and videos available upon request
Collection is currently from the shop only. Courier options will be available soon — if you need something arranged sooner, please feel free to call.
